My Dog has Mast Cell Tumors, Now What?

If you have received a mast cell tumor diagnosis in your dog, know that you are not alone and it’s not your fault. Mast cell tumors are sadly very common, but do not always result in cancer.

We are Kali’s Wish, a registered charity in Canada that’s here to help.

Start by:

  1. Taking a deep breath and try to remain calm. Your dog can feel your stress and anxiety.
  2. Doing research. The more you learn the better prepared you will feel to fight this battle with your dog. You can start HERE with information, and also learn Treatment Options on the Kali’s Wish Health Hub.
  3. Booking an appointment with your veterinarian (if you have not already). They will ultimately be the one to give you a diagnosis and follow your pet’s health.
  4. Making changes to your pet’s diet by cutting back on carbohydrates to starve cancer cells.
  5. Looking at your environment. Certain household cleaners and lawn care can be harmful to pets.

Symptoms of Mast Cell Tumors in Your Dog

Symptoms of this form of cancer will usually depend on the location of the mast cell tumour and whether or not the cancer has spread:

  • Mast cell tumours of the skin may present as a lump or bump on the surface of the skin or just below the skin’s surface.
  • Lumps are usually found on a dog’s trunk, hind limbs and between the toes. They may also appear on the head or neck.
  • Lumps vary in appearance: some may be red, swollen, ulcerated and may even change in size from day to day. (Dogs may or may not show any other symptoms other than the unexplained lump.)
  • Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dark or black feces, itchiness, lethargy, coughing, laboured breathing, slow wound healing and enlarged lymph nodes.
